Choosing the Right Finish Materials:
Kitchen Remodel
Planning a kitchen remodel? Choosing the right finish materials is just as important as the layout and design. This guide covers everything — from product categories and design tips to estimated costs for kitchen finish materials, plus a complete checklist at the end.
Understanding Kitchen Finish Materials
When embarking on a kitchen remodel, understanding the various finish materials available is crucial. This section will explore the range of options, their importance, and how to navigate durability considerations.
Overview of Kitchen Finish Options
Kitchen finish materials encompass a wide array of choices, each with unique characteristics and aesthetic appeal. From countertops to flooring, cabinets to backsplashes, the options can be overwhelming.
Countertops, for instance, range from natural stone like granite and marble to engineered quartz and budget-friendly laminate. Each material offers different benefits in terms of durability, maintenance, and style.
For flooring, options include hardwood, tile, vinyl, and even concrete, each bringing its own set of pros and cons to the table. The right choice depends on factors such as foot traffic, moisture levels, and overall kitchen design.
Cabinetry and hardware also play a significant role in the overall look and functionality of your kitchen. From wood types to finishes and hardware styles, these elements can dramatically impact the final aesthetic.
So lets get started with the most used aspects of our kitchen.
1. Appliances & Utilities
We’ll walk you through every appliance decision — from layout to finish — and ensure they all work together seamlessly. These choices will be visualized in your complimentary 3D kitchen design.
Microwave A built-in microwave saves counter space and can be placed in an upper cabinet, drawer base, or over the range. Look for models with sensor cooking and easy-clean interiors.
Oven / Range or Stovetop Choose between an all-in-one range or a separate cooktop and wall oven. Gas offers more control for serious cooks, while electric or induction models are great for easy cleanup and safety.
Dishwasher Integrated dishwashers with panel-ready fronts blend into cabinetry. Quiet operation (under 50 decibels) and third racks for utensils are key features to consider.
Refrigerator Decide between French door, side-by-side, or counter-depth refrigerators. Look for energy-efficient models with features like water/ice dispensers, flexible storage, and smart connectivity.
Wine Fridge (Optional) Perfect for wine lovers or entertainers. Undercounter models fit into base cabinetry and can be dual-zone for red and white wines.
Filtered Water Dispenser / Water Filtration System A built-in filtered water tap or under-sink filtration system can improve water taste and reduce contaminants. Great for families who drink a lot of water or cook often.
Hood or Vent System Essential for removing smoke, grease, and odors. Wall-mount or under-cabinet styles are common. Ducted systems are more efficient, though recirculating is an option if ductwork isn’t feasible.
Garbage Disposal & Push Button Choose a high-horsepower model for performance and quieter operation. A countertop air switch button can be added for convenience and cleaner looks.
Note: Simply choose the appliances you want — we’ll design the cabinetry around them for a seamless fit and perfect integration.
2. Electrical & Lighting
Standard Electrical Fixtures We include outlets, switches, and recessed lighting to meet functional needs.
Upgrade Options Consider under-cabinet lighting, light dimmers, smart switches (you supply, we install), and strategically placed specialty outlets to enhance convenience and aesthetics. Make sure to confirm with us first that any desired upgrades are included in your quote.
Code Compliance All electrical upgrades are done to meet California GFCI and Title 24 energy efficiency requirements.
3. Paint & Cabinet Finishes
We’ll help you choose the perfect color combinations for cabinets, walls, and trim — and you’ll be able to see how they all work together in your complimentary 3D kitchen design.
Cabinet Colors & Finishes We can finish your cabinets in any Sherwin-Williams color. You can mix upper and lower cabinet tones or use a contrasting island for visual impact.
Wall & Trim Paint Walls, ceilings, and baseboards should be painted in a durable, washable finish like satin or semi-gloss. Provide us with your chosen color brand/code, and we’ll handle the rest.
4. Flooring, Countertops & Backsplash
Flooring
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): Affordable, durable, and pet/kid-friendly. Great for full-home updates.
Tile: A premium, long-lasting option that’s more costly to install but offers excellent water resistance.
Countertops
Quartz: Durable and low-maintenance. Wide design range, but not heat-proof.
Porcelain: Sleek, heat- and UV-resistant, but can be brittle.
Marble: Timeless luxury, but porous and requires sealing.
Granite: Heat-resistant and tough. Requires occasional sealing.
Pro Tip: Choose your countertop slab early to ensure it complements your cabinets and backsplash.
Backsplash & Trim Your backsplash can tie everything together — from classic subway tile to natural stone. Don’t forget grout, Schluter trim, or quarter round. Buy grout and trim when you select tile to ensure compatibility.
5. Cabinetry (Doors, Styles, Hardware)
We’ll guide you through all the cabinetry choices — from style to hardware — and everything will be reflected in your complimentary 3D design so you can visualize it before we build.
Cabinet Styles
Shaker Style: Clean lines, timeless, and versatile.
Flat Panel (Slab): Modern, minimal, and sleek.
Custom Solid Wood: Premium hardwoods with high craftsmanship and longevity.
Cabinet Hardware & Doors Coordinate your handles and pulls with other metal finishes in the space. If new pantry or cabinet doors are part of your scope, select materials that match the rest of your cabinetry.
6. Fixtures (Sink, Faucet, Lighting Fixtures)
Sink & Faucet Select a sink style (single, double, farmhouse) based on your cooking habits. Add a built-in soap dispenser if desired. Choose a faucet that complements your other finishes.
Lighting Fixtures Island pendant lights or a statement chandelier can elevate the space. Ensure your lighting ties into the cabinet hardware and door handles for a polished look.
